After four years of preparation and debate the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) was finally approved by the EU Parliament on April 14th 2016. It will enter into force on May 25th 2018 - at which time businesses and organizations in non-compliance will face heavy fines.

The GDPR means new and stricter rules when it comes to the processing of personal data. It is a regulation that is designed to harmonize data privacy laws across Europe, to protect and empower all EU citizens’ data privacy and to reshape the way businesses and organizations across Europe approach data privacy, incorporating stringent legislation in this area, as well as give a give a greater protection and rights to individuals.
